The southeast community of Parkland is named due to its location adjacent to Fish Creek Provincial Park. In addition, there is a 20 metre wide strip of open space maintained along the top of the Fish Creek escarpment for public access to the Fish Creek park space. The extensive area of land that was annexed to the City in 1961 included the community of Parkland. However, development of this low density residential community with its associated facilities and services did not begin until 1974. Access to Downtown and other parts of the City is provided by Bow Bottom Trail, Canyon Meadows Drive and Macleod Trail.
